ArtSchool Offers 7-Week
“Creative Comics!” Course
Rio Aubry Taylor, a multi-disciplinary cartoonist, lends his expertise to the community by offering a “Creative Comics” course for kids and teens at the ArtSchool. Having received his MFA from the legendary Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont, Taylor’s work has featured in a number of publications, including anthologies released by The National Cartoonists Society and The Swedish Comics Association. Taylor will apply his experiences to teach this 7-week course that meets every Thursday from 4:30-6pm and runs from February 28th to April 18th (no class April 4th). No prior experience in drawing or writing is necessary and all skill levels are encouraged to participate.
Popularized by graphic novels such as Art Spiegelman’s Maus and Kate Beaton’s Hark! A Vagrant, the comics medium is an exciting and swiftly growing art-form. This course will teach how to create cohesive comics narratives (both short-form and graphic-novel length), while emphasizing clarity and experimentation. A variety of materials will be introduced and explored while students simultaneously learn basics such as page composition, character design and story structure. Other topics include basic color theory, do-it-yourself book binding, and online promotion. This class blends hands-on exercises with in-class lectures and instruction. Over the seven-week course, students will create two to twelve pages to be collected in a class anthology that can then be distributed to family and friends.

Rio Aubry Taylor, a multi-disciplinary artist, lends his expertise to the community by offering a “Meditation and Narrative & Sequential Art” course at the ArtSchool. No prior experience in drawing, writing, or meditating is necessary and all skill levels are encouraged to participate.
